Welcome to Building Serverless Event-Driven Architectures with Knative. While public cloud providers offer proprietary serverless functions (like AWS Lambda), many organizations want to bring the serverless paradigm to their own Kubernetes clusters. Knative is the open-source solution that makes this possible.
1. What is Knative?
Knative (pronounced kay-nay-tiv) sits on top of Kubernetes and Istio to provide two primary components: Knative Serving and Knative Eventing. It abstracts away the complex details of Kubernetes Deployments, Services, and Ingresses, allowing developers to focus solely on their code.
2. Knative Serving: Scale-to-Zero
The core feature of Knative Serving is request-driven autoscaling. When a Knative Service is deployed, it can scale up rapidly to handle traffic spikes. More importantly, when there is no traffic, Knative scales the pods down to zero. This is a massive cost-saver, as resources are only consumed when code is actually executing, mimicking the economics of public cloud serverless.
3. Knative Eventing: Connecting the Dots
Knative Eventing provides an infrastructure to route events from producers to consumers using the CloudEvents specification. It uses a concept of "Brokers" and "Triggers."
For example, you can configure a Broker to ingest messages from a Kafka topic. You then define a Trigger that says, "When an event of type 'image_uploaded' arrives, forward it to my Image Processing Knative Service." If the service is currently scaled to zero, the incoming event will transparently trigger it to spin up, process the image, and scale back down.
4. Avoiding Cloud Lock-In
Because Knative relies on standard Docker containers rather than proprietary function zip files, any web server capable of handling HTTP requests can be deployed as a Knative service. This allows organizations to build modern, event-driven architectures without locking themselves into a specific cloud vendor's ecosystem.
Conclusion
Knative bridges the gap between Kubernetes and serverless, enabling teams to build highly scalable, cost-efficient, event-driven applications on top of standard container orchestration infrastructure.
